BOSTON — Baseball’s calendar has always had a way of looking ahead. September can still be unfolding, October can still be waiting, and somewhere beyond another New England winter there is already a February afternoon in Florida with baseball scheduled to be played.
For the Boston Red Sox, that afternoon now has a date.
The Red Sox have announced their 2027 Spring Training exhibition schedule, beginning Friday, Feb. 19, against Northeastern University at JetBlue Park at Fenway South in Fort Myers, Fla. It will be the beginning of a spring that includes 30 Grapefruit League games, two meetings with the New York Yankees, a new tournament involving some of Boston’s top prospects and, eventually, two exhibition games in San Francisco before the regular season begins in Seattle.
Spring Training is preparation, of course, but it is also the first opportunity each year to discover what a baseball team might become.
There will be jobs to win and lineups to construct. There will be prospects attempting to turn potential into opportunity and established players preparing themselves for another six-month season. There will be games that disappear from the standings as soon as they end but still help determine who is standing on a major league field when the games begin counting.
For Boston, the process will begin against college players.
The Northeastern game on Feb. 19 will precede the beginning of Boston’s Grapefruit League schedule by one day. The Red Sox will travel to Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte, Fla., on Saturday, Feb. 20, to face the Tampa Bay Rays in the first of their 30 Grapefruit League games.
From there, the familiar rhythms of a Florida baseball spring will begin.
The Red Sox are scheduled to play 10 games against American League East opponents, providing regular reminders that Spring Training eventually gives way to considerably more consequential meetings within the division.
Four of those games will be against Tampa Bay. Boston will play two against the Toronto Blue Jays and two against the Baltimore Orioles.
And, inevitably, there will be the Yankees.
Boston and New York will meet twice during the Grapefruit League schedule. The first game will be played Tuesday, March 9, in Tampa, Fla. The Yankees will then visit JetBlue Park on Wednesday, March 17.
No February or March game can duplicate what Red Sox-Yankees baseball becomes during the regular season. The standings are absent, the late innings are frequently filled with players fighting for roster positions, and the urgency belongs more to preparation than rivalry.
Still, the uniform on the other side remains recognizable.
The Red Sox will also face the Minnesota Twins, St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers and Washington Nationals during their Florida schedule.
But one of the more intriguing portions of the 2027 spring will involve players who may represent Boston’s future rather than its Opening Day present.
Major League Baseball’s new single-elimination Spring Breakout Tournament will bring Red Sox and Twins prospects together Monday, March 8, at JetBlue Park.
Unlike the ordinary exhibition game, advancement will be attached to the result.
The winner will move into the tournament’s second round Friday, March 12. The semifinal is scheduled for March 16, followed by the Grapefruit League title game March 19. Sites for the semifinal and championship game have not yet been determined.
That format gives the prospect showcase something Spring Training games ordinarily lack: elimination.
For young players, Spring Training has traditionally existed partly as an evaluation. A prospect receives a few innings, a few at-bats or a few opportunities against competition that may include established major leaguers, other prospects and players trying to extend their careers.
The tournament introduces another element.
Win, and there is another game.
Lose, and there is not.
For the Red Sox, it also provides another opportunity to put some of the organization’s top prospects together on the same field, at the same time, in a game structured around advancement rather than simply preparation.
The timing will place the first-round matchup directly between Boston’s two scheduled meetings with the Yankees. The Red Sox prospects will face Minnesota on March 8, followed by the major league club’s trip to Tampa to play New York on March 9.
If Boston’s prospects advance, their second-round game will come March 12. A semifinal appearance would follow March 16, one day before the Yankees visit JetBlue Park.
All of it will unfold during Boston’s 16th Spring Training season at JetBlue Park at Fenway South.
Sixteen years are enough for a ballpark to become part of a club’s annual identity. JetBlue Park is no longer simply Boston’s relatively new Florida home. Another generation of Red Sox players has passed through it, with every spring beginning with variations of the same questions.
Who is ready?
Who is healthy?
Who has improved?
Who belongs?
And, eventually, who goes north?
In 2027, however, Boston will not immediately go north when its Florida work is finished.
The Red Sox will conclude their Grapefruit League schedule Sunday, March 21, against Minnesota at JetBlue Park. That will end the Florida portion of the exhibition season, but not the exhibition schedule itself.
Boston will head west.
Before traveling to Seattle to begin the regular season, the Red Sox will stop in San Francisco for two exhibition games against the Giants at Oracle Park on March 22 and March 23.
That creates an unusual geographical transition from Spring Training to the regular season.
The Red Sox will begin in Fort Myers, work their way through the Grapefruit League, finish their Florida schedule against Minnesota and then cross the country for two final rehearsals in San Francisco. From there, they will continue to Seattle, where exhibition baseball finally gives way to games that count.
The two games at Oracle Park should provide a different final test than another afternoon in Florida.
By that stage of March, roster decisions will have moved considerably closer to completion. The regular season will be immediately ahead, and the atmosphere of a major league ballpark offers a different setting for the final preparation than the traditional Spring Training environment.
Then comes Seattle.
That is where everything changes.
A February loss to Tampa Bay will not follow the Red Sox into the standings. A March victory over the Yankees will not provide an advantage in the American League East. Even a productive individual spring does not guarantee that the same results will follow once pitchers, hitters and managers begin operating under regular-season consequences.
But Spring Training remains where those possibilities begin to take shape.
It is where a roster starts becoming something more than a collection of names. It is where young players can force difficult decisions and veterans can prepare for the demands ahead. It is where questions that follow a team through the winter finally begin receiving answers on a baseball field.
The exact starting times for Boston’s 2027 Spring Training games have not yet been finalized and will be announced later. The announced dates are also subject to change.
Season tickets, group sales and premium suites for Red Sox Spring Training are already available, while single-game tickets will go on sale later. CVS Health will again present Red Sox Spring Training, and Mastercard remains the club’s preferred payment method.
Those are the logistical details surrounding another spring.
The baseball details will have to wait.
There are still months before the Red Sox gather in Fort Myers, before pitchers begin throwing in Florida sunshine and before hitters step into the box trying to rediscover the timing that disappeared during the winter.
But the road has been drawn.
It starts Feb. 19 against Northeastern. It moves through 30 Grapefruit League games, two meetings with the Yankees and a new opportunity for Boston’s prospects to play tournament baseball. It finishes in Florida against Minnesota, continues across the country to San Francisco and ultimately points toward Seattle.
Spring Training cannot tell the Red Sox what kind of 2027 season awaits them.
It can only provide the first clues.
