WORCESTER, Mass. — When gunfire erupts, there is no time to figure out who is responsible for what.
That is why the entire Quinsigamond Community College Police Department recently went through comprehensive active shooter response training alongside the Worcester Police Department SWAT Team, putting personnel across the department through training designed for one of the most dangerous emergencies a college campus could face.
Patrol officers were not the only ones involved.
Communications staff, security personnel and command staff also participated, bringing together the people who would have different but critical responsibilities if a real-life attack unfolded on campus.
The goal was readiness.
Active shooter incidents can develop rapidly, forcing police, dispatchers, security personnel and supervisors to make critical decisions under extreme pressure. The training focused on making sure personnel understand their individual responsibilities while strengthening communication, coordination, decision-making and tactical response capabilities across the department.
The exercises also gave QCC Police personnel an opportunity to work through realistic scenarios and reinforce established emergency protocols instead of waiting for an actual crisis to test those procedures.
For a college campus filled every day with students, faculty, staff and visitors, that preparation can be critical.
The training was also about partnerships.
QCC Police worked alongside personnel from the Worcester Police Department SWAT Team, allowing campus officers and other public safety personnel to train with the agency that could become a critical partner during a major emergency in Worcester.
The department said the collaboration is part of its continuing effort to maintain a safe campus and ensure personnel are prepared to respond during an emergency.
The training also included assistance from the Bunker Hill Community College Police Department, which provided staff to help facilitate the exercises.
QCC Police thanked both departments for their participation and support.
For the department, the exercise was not simply about tactical response. It was about making sure everyone — from the person receiving the first emergency communication to officers responding to the scene and command personnel managing the incident — understands what must happen when seconds matter.
Through continued training, realistic scenarios and coordination with outside public safety agencies, QCC Police said it remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure campus environment and ensuring the highest level of emergency preparedness.
